至于诗的风格，从传统来讲也不外乎两类，既我国历代诗话所谓豪放与婉约，西方古典文艺理论概括的崇高(the Sublime)和秀美(the Beautiful)。诚然，真正的诗人各有独创的风格，如约翰·多恩的诗句刚健而峭刻(hardlines)，“骨劲而气猛”（引《文心雕龙·风骨篇》；本集选译的《死神莫骄妄》一诗显然反映了这种“风骨”。对比之下，弥尔顿的诗风华严雄浑，斯宾塞绚丽，马洛恢宏；灵秀如雪莱，蕴藉如济慈，沉郁如豪斯曼；丁尼生韵律谨严，铸词炼句精工而华瞻；布朗宁绘声绘影，戏剧性特强；斯温伯恩音节谐婉，爱默生雅人深致，罗塞蒂兄妹要眇宜修。莎士比亚则兼备众美，即使从这里选的六首十四行诗，也能领略其丰富多采的风格。总之，从这一简编中，各家的诗风可见一斑。
