What I'd do, I figured, I'd go down to Holland Tunnel and bum a ride, and then I'd bum another one, and another one, and another one, and in a few days I'd be somewhere out West where it was very pretty and sunny and where nobody'd know me and I'd get a job. I figured I could get job at a filling station somewhere, putting gas and oil in people's cars. I didn't care what kind of jobs it was, though. Just so people didn't know me I didn't know anybody. I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf - mutes. That way I wouldn't have to have any goddam stupid useless conversations with anybody. If anybody wanted to tell me something, they'd get bored as hell doing that after a while, and then I'd be through with having conversations for the rest of my life. Everybody'd think I was just a poor deaf -mute bastard and they'd pay me alone. They'd let me put gas and oil in their stupid cars, and they'd pay me a salary and all for it, and I'd build me a little cabin somewhere with the dough I made and live there for the rest of my life.
I'd meet this beautiful girl that was also a deaf- mute and we'd get married. She'd come and live in my cabin with me, and if she wanted to say anything to me, she'd have to write it on a goddam piece of paper, like everybody else. if we had any children, we'd hide them in somewhere. We could buy a lot of books and teach them how to read and write by ourselves.
I got excited as hell thinking about it. I really did. I knew the part about pretending I was a deaf -mute was crazy, but I liked thinking about it anyway.

"This fall I think you're riding for-it's a special kind of fall, a horrible kind. The man falling isn't permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. He just keeps falling and falling. The whole arrangement's designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn't supply them with . Or they thought their own environment couldn't supply them with . So they up looking. They gave it up before they ever really even got started."
"The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one"

I was the only one left in the tomb then. I sort of liked it, in a way. It was so nice and peaceful. Then, all of a sudden, you'd never guess what I saw on the wall. Another "Fuck you."
That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under you nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Hollden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "Fuck you." I'm positive, in fact.

Something else an academic education will do for you. If you go along with it any considerable distance, it'll begin to give you an idea what size mind you have. what it'll fit and, maybe, what it won't. After a while, you'll have an idea what kind of thoughts your particular size mind should be wearing. For one thing, it may save you an extraordinary amount of time trying on ideas that don't suit you, aren't becoming to you. You'll begin to know your true measurements and dress your mind accordingly."

I'm ready for you.

I thought how she‘d see the same stuff I used to see, and how she'd be different every time she saw it. It didn't exactly depress me to think about it, but it didn't make me feel gay as hell, either.Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to bo able to stick them in one of those big glass and just leave them alone.

"I think that one of these days, you're going to have to find out where you want to go. And then you're got to start going there. But immediately, you can't afford to lose a minute. Not you."
"But I think that once you have a fair idea where you want to go, your first move will be to apply yourself in school. You'll have to. You're a student -whether the idea appeals to you or not . You're in love with knowledge. And I think you'll find, once you get past all the Mr. Vineses and their Oral Comp-"
"Mr. Vinsons,"I said.
"All right-the Mr. Vinsons. Once you get past all the Mr. Vinsons, you're going to start getting closer and closer - that is, if you want to, and if you look for it and wait for it - to the kind of information that will be very, very dear to your heart.Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now.Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. you'll learn from them - if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry."

The thing with child is, if they want to grab the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off they fall off, but it's bad if you say anything to them.
Boy, it begin to rain like a bastard. In buckets, I swear to God. All the parents and mothers and everybody went over and stood right under the roof of the car-rousel, so they wouldn't get soaked to the skin or anything, but I stuck around on the bench for quite a while. I goe pretty soaking wet, especially my neck and my pants. My hunting hat really gave me quite a lot of protection, in a way, but I got soaked anyway. I didn't care, though. I felt so happy all of sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. I was damn near bawling, I felt so damn happy, if you want to know the truth. I don't know why. It was just that she looked so damn nice, the way she kept going around and around, in her blue coat and all. God, I wish you could've been there.

All of a sudden, I decided what I'd really do ,I'd get the hell out of Pencey--right that same night and all.I mean not wait till Wednesday or anything. I just didn't want to hang around any more. It made me too sad and lonesome.
One thing about packing depressed me a little. I had to pack these brand-new ice skates my mother had practically just sent me a couple of days before. That depressed me. I could see my mother going in Spaulding's and asking the salesman a million dopy questions-and here I was getting the ax again.
