"Whereas MacCabe thinks of the nineteenth-century novel as monologic pinned under one dominant discourse, Bakhtin proposes that the principal novelistic tradition is that of dialogue of heteroglossia ... For Bakhtin, the narrator's interventions in the work of Tolstoy or Eliot constitute heterogeneous attacks upon various predefined conceptions of reality: in these novels, visions of the world struggle in open battle.
The battle is fought by means of various discourses. But Bakhtin denies that there can be any static of stable metalanguage. He shows how the comic novel pioneered a method whereby discourses mingled not only in dialogue exchanges but also within the enveloping narration. "
