They havetaken a deep root among the people. For instance, springfestival couplets, the character of (happiness), and pa-per-cuts are pasted on door panels and windows at allhouseholds to bid farewell to the outgoing year, ringing inthe new year, and pray for the arrival of happiness at thedoorway. On New Year's Day, people greet one another bysaying "May you be happy and prosperous, " or "HappyNew Year. " When a relative or a friend goes out on a jour-ney, one may wish him or her a "safe trip or "goodluck. " When a man and a woman get married, people ex-tend congratulations, wishing them to "remain devoted to"bethe end of their lives" or a happy marriage. " When anelder celebrates his or her birthday, the juniors wish him orher to "live a life as long as South Mountain" or "enjoyboth felicity and longevity. " When one opens a business, one's friends wish "one's source of wealth is abundant, "and "one makes a dipperful gold as daily profits. " In thisway, people express their desires for auspiciousness andhappiness.

章节摘录

插图:It is an auspicious design created in ancient China. The term of flying an-gel is from Buddhism, which says there are eight gods that support Buddhism. One of which is the flying angel, or Gandhava in Sanskrit, living in South Vajraon Sumeru. It is also known as the Goddess of Fragrant Sound, because ittouches neither wine nor meat but only smells fragrance. When the Heavenly God wants to make merry, the flying angel reveals itselfin different appearances and dances in the air with amusical instrument in hand. Hence it is also calledthe Goddess of Heavenly Music, The FlyingAngel of Music and Dance, or the GoddessSoaring in the Sky. It is a symbol ofhappiness and auspiciousness inBuddhism. The design of theflying angel has differentfeatures at different times. In the early days of the Wei Dynasty (386-534), it was designedas a female or malewith a round face and shorter floating rib- bons. During the Eastern(534 - 550) and Western(535 - 556) Wei dy- nasties and the NorthernQi Dynasty (550-557),it tended to be fine and delicate in fea-tures with longer floating ribbons, whichenhanced the sense of flying, a phenomenon related tomoral values in society at that time. In the heyday of theTang Dynasty, designs of the flying angel appeared as a younggirl with a well-shaped body and smoothly floating ribbons twoto three times longer than its height. Various images of the fly-ing angel can be found from the murals in the Dunhuang, Yun-gang, Longmen, and Gongxian County grottoes.
