Second, the student speaks for one to two minutes on the given topic. This means that youshould time your responses carefully when preparing for the test. The examiner will not allow thestudent to speak for longer than two minutes. Students should note that they do not have to talk forthe whole two minutes. This is useful to remember if you feel that your level of fluency is droppingafter one minute, or if you have no more to say. One minute (the minimum suggested time) may bea little short, but is still acceptable. Obviously, two minutes of fluent speech, using plenty of goodvocabulary and grammar is better than one minute of similar quality speech, but this makes little orno difference unless you are aiming at a very high score. Remember——no part of the speakingmodule is a test of how long a student can taIk——quaIity is more important than quantity/Third, the examiner will ask the student one or two follow-up questions based on what thecandidate has said regarding the topic. When the examiner asks a "follow up" question, this is nota cue for you to continue talking at length about the original topic question. Answer the follow-upquestion directly and succinctly, perhaps using only a few words or one or two sentences. Thenstop. If your answer in Part Two is a little short——closer to one minute than two——you should expecttwo follow-up questions. A candidate who has spoken for the full two minutes is likely to only getone follow-up question. This helps to make sure that interviews with different candidates are ofapproximately the same length. Part Two lasts three to four minutes in total.
