In the second half of his life, Frost was the most widely-read and honoredAmerican poet of the twentieth century. Although he was famed for his poems onNew England, he was born in San Francisco. Not until the death of his father in1885 did the family move back to the north-east coast where his mother taughtat grade schools or ran them. Frost studied one semester at Dartmouth Collegeand nearly two years at Harvard, but without a degree he could not teach atcollege. After he graduated from high school, Frost taught at grade school ortook on various low-paying jobs. He married his high-school sweetheart whenonly twenty-one and beginning from the year after, his wife gave birth to sixchildren, four of whom survived until they became adults. In 1900, with the aidof his grandfather, he moved to a farm in New Hampshire and supported hisearnings with food he grew on his farm and writing poems daily. From the timehe left high school he had been submitting his poems for publication, but withrare exceptions, they were rejected. Nevertheless, he did not lose heart andwrote persistently. Hoping to find a more enthusiastic audience in England, in1912 he took his wife and children and the poems he had written to a farm there. In England, Frost met the poets Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell and they helpedpromote his poetry with their favorable reviews when the first two volumes werepublished in 1913 and 1914. Frosts name was made in both the UK and theUS and he returned to New England in 1915, settling down on a farm thereand making arrangements for his books to be published in the US. There, hewas not only published but received numerous honors and awards. He wasinvited to teach at Amherst College, the University of Michigan at Ann Arborand helped found the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College andfinally, was invited to teach at Harvard and Dartmouth. Despite the honors, hislife was tragic. In 1929, he lost his only sister, in 1934, one of his daughters, hiswife in 1938 and his only surviving son who committed suicide in 1940. Anotherdaughter was insane and had to be put into an asylu.m eventually. These werepartly responsible for the dark side of Frost. While many of his poems were aboutnature, they were unlike Wordsworths or the poems of such mid-nineteenthcentury poets as Bryant in that they were much darker. His poetry was closerto that of Hardys.
