Becoming a writer1 John Milton (1608-1674),poet and polemicist, was born at 6.5o a.m. onFriday 9 December 16o8 in the house at thesign of the Spread Eagle, Bread Street, London, and baptized in nearby All IIallows Church on2o December, the third child of John Milton(1562-1647), and his wife, Sara, nee Jeffrey(c.1572-1657). The house in Bread Street accom-modated the scriveners business of Mi] tons fat, her, and was also the family home. The most remark-able feature of the domestic life of Miltons child-hood was music: Mihons father" was a composer, and the music that he wrote was designed for per-forrnance in private houses, without an audience.Milton grew up in a household in which musicwas performed, and his skills as a. singer in con-sorts and as a player of the organ and the bass violwere acquired as a child in Bread Street.Education: St Pauls and CambridgeMilton was initially educated at home by pri-vate tutors, including Thomas Young, a Scottishschoohnaster who eventually became master ofJesus College, Cambridge. In Ad patrem (To myFather) Milton was later to express his grati-tude that his father had paid for lessons in Latin,Greek, Hebrew, French, and Italian. It is likelythat instruction in these languages began withprivate tutors; although Milton went on to studythe ancient languages at school, modern lan-guages were not taught in schools, and all ofMiltons instruction in French and Italian (andpossibly Spanish) was given by private tutors. Atan unknown date between 1615 and 1621 Miltonbecame a pupil at nearby St Pauls School; themost likely date is 1620, when the departure ofThomas Young for a pulpit in Hamburg may haveprompted the decision to send Milton to school.
