She never suspected that the exercise books and new songs which she found in the rack were put there for her especial benefit, and when he talked to her about music at home, she only thought how kind he was to tell things that helped her so much.

It's nice to have accomplishments and be elegant, but not to show off or get perker up. These things are always seen and felt in a person's manner and conversations, if modestly used, but it is not necessary to display them. Any more than it's proper to wear all your bonnets and gowns and ribbons at once, that folks may know you've got them.
