学术研究经历
1983年毕业于北京大学,留校任教,从事心理测评和人才选拔研究工作,承担中组部和北京市委组织部第三梯队建设选拔评估项目,专著《心理测验》曾获北京大学青年教师科研二等奖 (1988),为文革后国内首批有关心理测验的教科书。
1989年1月赴美国密歇根大学作访问学者,1991年改读博士学位,从事认知社会心理学研究。毕业论文《辩证思维的文化差异》获美国密歇根大学最佳论文奖 (1997)。
1997年至今,任教于美国伯克利加州大学,2003年获终身教授职位。
2008年回国,任教于清华大学心理学系,为复系后首任系主任。
曾承担了中国科技部,铁道部,国家体育总局,教育部,美国国家自然科学基金, 美国国家心理健康基金会, 美国国防部等多项研究课题。 曾任美国心理学会 (APA)科学领导委员会委员及第五届世界华人心理学家学术研讨会共同主席 (2004). 获得教育部春晖计划, 长江学者奖励,2009年入选中组部海外高级人才引进计划(“千人计划”)。
专著《文化心理学》为美国多所大学指定参考书 (2000).
论文《文化与归因》, 获美国心理学会年度优秀论文奖 (1994).
论文《文化与种族认同》获美国中西部心理学会研究生论文一等奖 (1996).
论文《文化, 辩证与矛盾思维》, 收入社会心理学经典论文 (1999).

共编著6本著作, 100多篇论文. 根据2007年的一项调查, 他曾是全世界副教授级论文被引用最多的社会心理学家(Nia Phillipas, “Citations Counts, Prestige measurement, and Graduate Training in Social Psychology”University of Kansas, 2007).
