印中搜闻

作者简介

《印中搜闻》是新教传教士在马六甲创办的最早的外文期刊，侧重对印度和中国传教情况的报导，介绍了中国的佛、道和一些民间信仰。由于清政府实行闭关政策,中西交往阻断。在这种情况下，以英文出版的《印中搜闻》上刊载的有关中国方方面面的报导,便成为西方人了解中国现貌的主要资料来源。《印中搜闻》创办不久,便在欧美学术界和汉学界产生了很大影响,至今仍得到当今汉学家的很高评价,成为最有价值的传教会历史记载之一。

前言

　　1817年5月，一份名为《印中搜闻》（The Indo—Chinese Gleaner）的英文季刊开始发行。这份刊物的发行地是远离中国的马六甲，其内容却主要与中国相关。一般讨论中国报刊史或新闻史的著作，均会提及同一时期在马六甲发行的中文月刊《察世俗每月统记传》，以及同样由传教士所办、但在广州发行的英文月刊《中国丛报》（The Chinese Repository），而对《印中搜闻》却鲜有专论者。近年，研究19世纪前期中西文化交流史的学者开始关注这份刊物及其资料价值，但其原刊本在中国的图书馆或学术机构均无收藏。海外藏有该刊的图书馆也不多，而能保存完整者更少。此次国家图书馆出版社尽力搜集该刊，将其影印出版，当可为研究近代中西文化交流史、中国基督教史乃至社会文化史的学者提供极为难得的第一手资料。以下就笔者管见所及，对《印中搜闻》作些简要的介绍。　　《印中搜闻》本无中文刊名，近年有人译为《印支搜闻》。这种译法或许是受到这份刊物名称中的“Indo-Chinese”这一单词的影响。这个词现在一般译作“印度支那”，简作“印支”。翻阅工具书，可知这个英文单词作为形容词，指的是与东南亚，精确一点说，是与中南半岛相关的事物。但如果我们对这份刊物稍加浏览，即可发现，有关现代意义上的印度支那这一地区的内容极少，大部分文章与中国相关。这就使我们有理由相信，在这份刊物发行的年代，Indo-Chinese这个词与这个词的现代含义是不同的。因此，将刊名译成“印支搜闻”不符合刊物内容。在该刊发刊词中，编者米怜（William Milne）强调该刊服务于“我们传教会在东方的布道团”，希望反映从印度到中国的地域的情形，Indo—Chinese这个词实际上是指“从印度到中国的”空间概念。
