　　PASSAGE 2　　Humans with Amazing SensesBlind people who interact with the world like dolphins and bats When bats go out to hunt，they send out sonar signals at such high frequenties andin such rapid bursts that they can hear the signaIs bounce off mosquitoes in midair?They then zero in（瞄准）on the insects Iike laser guided missiles?Dolphjns use the sametechnique to find their dinners．It’s called echolocation（回声定位法），a technique thatuses sound to identifY objects by the echoes they produce.　　Fourteen year aid Ben Underwood is one of the few people known to useecholocation as a primary means。f navigating the world on land．There’s not even a hintof Iight reaching his brain．His eyes are artificial，but his brain has adapted to allowhim to appraise his environment．He makes a“clieking”sound to communicate withobjects and peopIe around him．　　Scientists have discovered that in the brains of the bIind。the visual cortex has notbecome useless．as they once beIieyed．When bIind people use another sense——touch orhearing．for example to substitute for sight，the brain’s VisuaI cortex becomesactive，even though no images reach it from the optic nerve．Echolocation creates itsown images．　　“I can hear that waIl behind you over there．I con hear right there——the tadio，andthe fan．”Ben says．　　Ben says every object in his I ife ta Iks to him in ways that no one else can hear or understand．　　Forty—year old DanieI mish aIso uses echolocation，and has become an expert on it，founding the World Access for the Blind．an organization that teaches others how to echoIocate．Kish Ieads other blind people on mountain biking tours and hikes in the wiIderness．visuaIizing and describing the picturesque sights around hjm through echaIocating．
